Bursaries and Scholarships Use of Proceeds
On the behalf of the Board Members and all members of Slovakia-Slovak National Association of Canada, I would like to explain our reason for using proceeds for bursaries and scholarships and provide a detailed outline of the program. As a group, we have benefited much from the support of the government and from individuals; our hope is that we can contribute back to the community. In our view, one of the best ways is to support education, which indirectly benefits the whole community. In particularly, our focus would be on individuals who consider the needs of their community, particularly through volunteering.
The eligibility criteria for the students include:
1. The student must be enrolled full-time in any post-secondary institution governed under the University Act, the Colleges Act and the Technical Institutes Act.
2. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.7.
3. The student must have volunteered at least 20 hours for a non-profit organization within the last year.
Students do not have to be of Slovak descent and can volunteer for any non-profit organization. Applications must include:
1. A signed application form which provides personal information (full name and contact information) and signed approval that all supplied materials are accurate.
2. Proof of full-time enrollment at a post-secondary institution governed under the University Act, the Colleges Act and the Technical Institutes Act. The proof of fulltime enrollment must be certified by the post-secondary institution to ensure validity; a copy of a Student ID card is not valid.
3. An official sealed transcript to ensure a minimum GPA of 2.7.
4. Signed and sealed letter from an administrator at a non-profit organization proving that the student has volunteered at least 20 hours at that non-profit organization.
The selection group will be the Board Members of the Slovakia-Slovak National Association of Canada. The committee will review applications and select applicants based on hours volunteered and academic merit. If a board member is related to the applicant, they will be required to leave the room while the applicant is reviewed and will not have a vote in the decision to award a scholarship to the applicant.
Thank you for your co-operation and time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
